Illustration skills, and graphic design skills, and the color wheel memorized, complete with all the Pantone and hexidecimal color codes, but, none of those skills are even needed for great logo design!
So, what IS needed?
Insight.
Innovation.
Inventiveness.
Imagination.
Yep, the old four-eyed geek with the glasses strikes again with his four "I" mind. Smart companies are looking for meaningful logo designs that showcase what their company stands for or does, in a memorable and unique way. It's the not-so-smart companies who are easily wowed by a pretty typeface, and it is up to YOU to set them straight, for the good of the company, not just for the good of your own bank account, tempting though it may be to want to BS a newbie. No, your insight and your sense of presentation are much more important to your career as a
logo designer than your school-taught illustration and design skills. You may want to show off your expensive book learning, but logos are not the place to do it.
Here are a few guidelines to take into consideration:
Keep it simple - think Nike.
The Nike logo design is often used as an example for its excellence of simplicity and minimalist design. With the Nike logo you get the sense of motion, speed and an abstract shoe shape. See how it fits all four of the I's?
Make it flexible for use alone or in combination.
Some logos use images that can easily stand alone and be recognizable without words. Yet at the same time, it can be combined with the company name above it, below it, along one side of it, or even inside of it or surrounding it, if need be. Make your design flexible enough to look good no matter how the company wants to display it, with or without the company name just in case they need it to fit the shape of a label for any product that the company may want to produce..
Make it versatile in terms of color.
A
logo design needs to look good in both black and white, such as when photocopied, as well as in any color the company may decide to use in order to harmonize or contrast with any product they may want to place it on. It's a definite plus if your logo looks just as great on a coffee mug, advertising pen or company T-shirt. as it does on the corporate website.
Create your own font as a protection.

Everyone thinks they're a l
ogo designer these days. But do half of them even know how to create one? Oh, sure, they have the
How many times have you seen a logo design that used a common typeface? Helvetica, Times New Roman and Papyrus are some of the most common ones used. There are over 100,000 typefaces out there already, and few have time to go weeding through the overwhelming pile so they just go with the mockup font to save time. Bad move! Nothing beats a custom-lettered typeface design, The reason is simple. It is so easy these days to search out what typeface was used, that your logo could be ripped off in a heartbeat and used by the unscrupulous on unauthorized knock-offs of the company's products. So, your typeface should be unique, kept inhouse only and kept away from the public searches.
Don't make it obvious or predictable.
The logo should tell a story without being obvious about what the product actually is. While it's cute to use an image that looks like a stylized product that the company makes, it shouldn't shout so loudly that the company feels trapped into not producing anything different later on.. A general image that conveys the overall CONCEPT of what the company does is much better than using an image of something specific.
Once you understand the four "I" concept of logo design, you'll be well on your way to becoming a sought after logo designer, especially once you hit the big time, like the fellow who did the Nike logo did. Have fun!
